Guidelines for writers
North Wind Press [NWP] is a folk publisher.
We facilitate the transmission of writing and imaging by Canadians
into the Canadian market. The type of creative work we are looking
for is that which emerges out of contemplation, struggle, and experience.
We do not want formula work aimed at a wide commercial market, or
off-the-cuff nonsense, or deliberate sensationalism.
Life is experienced in many forms and includes all dimensions. We
publish recipes by someone for whom food is a core element of living,
and humour from those for whom it is the best expression of personal
discovery. We look for poems that celebrate our land and poems from
the depths of the soul. The variety of experience lived by those
who love to share through the written word and image is infinite.
However, as Kurt Vonnegut opined in one of his essays, writers never
know when to stop - and he included himself. NWP says: go with the
need of what you are creating and stop when you are finished. If
that means one page for an essay or story, or two lines for a poem,
or five images, fine. If it emerges from your internal cauldron
as a response to your experience of life - send it.
As long as it has integrity and touches us, we will be happy to
consider it.
We at NWP operate a profit-sharing system with our contributors.
Each contract is worked out according to the input [work or capital]
of the author and NWP. Since there is no charge for the NUGGETs
reading room downloads, there are no royalties due on submission
approved for display. Email exchange and e-signature will take care
of contractual agreement for display details.
Short Stories
Everyone has at least one story to tell, and this is your chance.
Tell it well. Let it be science fiction or a slice of reality, but
let it be creative. As NUGGETs is online we do not strictly limit
length, but try to keep your contribution under 10,000 words. To
integrate your story into our special PDF format, there will be
a small production fee of $100. You the writer will retain copyright.
Essays
Many people have opinions, but few can back them with facts
and logic and then present them in a well-written style. We are
looking for opinions on various aspects of our lives, written with
a good balance between objective and subjective input. In other
words, we want neither rants nor indifference. The essays can be
scholarly, comical, or deeply personal. One option is our Your Reporter
forma, which allows a more casual approach, so we hear the writer's
voice presenting evidence and/or insights. Since NUGGETs is online
we do not strictly limit length, but try to keep your contribution
under 10,000 words. To integrate your essay into our special PDF
format, there will be a small production fee of $100. You the writer
will retain copyright.
Poetry
We at NWP do not tell a poet how to write. If asked, we will
give editing suggestions. To integrate your poetry into our special
PDF format, there will be a small production fee of $100. You the
writer will retain copyright.
Formats
Literary submissions: MS Word format, single space, Times Roman
font, 12 point. Do not indent paragraphs, but separate paragraphs
with a space. If you have graphics or pictures, indicate correct
